評審需要的是依照賽事的規則規章，在時間內針對選手在賽事中的表現給予相對應的分數；而選手則是在賽事期間儘可能端出最好的表現。兩個角色其實都需要很多的練習才能做得好，一個好的舞臺是需要由好的選手以及好的評審一同架構的，缺一不可。</p>

當比賽的規格越高，賽事走向就越偏向比較品質與競技；當規格越低，賽事走向則偏向輕鬆的交流切磋。</p>

比賽規格可以從三個細節去評斷，第一是評分的方式，第二是評審的組成，第三則是選手的組成。</p>

賽事若有擬定詳細的評分表格，評審需要在評分表上填寫分數並對此評分表負責，那麼賽事的客觀性與嚴謹度就會相對較高；如果評分表過於簡單，甚至僅由評審自由心證給予分數或匿名投票，那麼就有很多的模糊地帶。</p>

當評審需要具備一定經歷，並經過受訓、考覈才能獲得評審資格，那麼賽事相對嚴謹。反之若評審爲邀請制，甚至是所謂廠商杯比賽（評審皆與主辦單位有商業上的利益關係），那麼賽事的主觀色彩就很高。</p>

選手方面，國家賽事較沒有爭議，但國際賽事就很複雜了。許多國際賽皆稱自己爲世界賽，然而選手若需要先行經過會員國賽事甄選，取得冠軍後才獲得代表權，那麼比賽規格當然就高上許多；反之部分國際賽並沒有選拔選手的機制，而是採用報名即可參賽的方式，性質就又有所不同了。</p>

而頂尖的咖啡賽事，總是帶有一些共通的特色。比如說世界咖啡師大賽（World Barista Championship; WBC），一直以來就被視爲咖啡賽事中的最高殿堂，有接觸運動的人總會以咖啡界中的奧運來稱呼，而喜歡賽車的人則稱之爲咖啡界中的F1賽車。</p>
